  30. TECHNICAL BACKGROUND

  32. Netscape Navigator uses random information to generate session
  33. encryption keys of either 40 or 128 bits in length. The random
  34. information is found through a variety of functions that look into a
  35. user's machine for information about how many processes are running,
  36. process ID numbers, the current time in microseconds, etc. Previous
  37. releases of Netscape Navigator were vulnerable because the size of
  38. random input was less than the size of the subsequent keys. This
  39. means that instead of searching through all the 2^128 possible keys
  40. by brute force, a potential intruder only had to search through a
  41. significantly smaller key space by brute force. This was a
  42. substantially easier problem to solve because it takes much less
  43. compute time and means 40-bit or 128-bit key strength is
  44. substantially reduced.

  47. SOLUTION
  48.  
  49. Netscape Navigator 1.12 (Macintosh) fixes the specific portion of
  50. our software where this vulnerability existed. We have significantly
  51. increased the amount of random information that cannot be discovered
  52. by external sources from approximately 30 bits to approximately 300
  53. bits.
  54.  
  55. Netscape has greatly expanded the techniques and sources used to
  56. generate the random information. The number of unpredictable bits in
  57. the RNG makes it no longer the weak link in the chain.

  60.                           Installation Instructions

  63. This version of Netscape comes with an installer which will let you
  64. choose between 68000, PowerPC and FAT binaries of Netscape.

  66. Installation Steps:
  67.  
  68. 1) Download the .HQX file to your Macintosh.  If you are using Netscape
  69. to do the download and your machine is correctly configured, Netscape
  70. will automatically run the correct program to decode the .HQX file.  If
  71. not, you wil need to use one of the many utilities which can decode
  72. .HQX files (Binhex format), we recommend something in the StuffIt
  73. family of products, such as "StuffIt Expander"
  74.  
  75. 2) To install Netscape, double click the installer named "Netscape 1.12
  76. Installer".

  78. a)  Press "Install" to get a binary which matches your Macintosh CPU.
  79.  
  80. b) To install a FAT binary which will run on all Macintoshes, select
  81. "Custom Install" by pulling down the menu in the upper left corner of
  82. the installer window, and then press the "Install" button.

  85. helpful and up-to-date information about running this version of
  86. Netscape.
